Canning Sea Scouts has sections that cater for young children ranging from 6 years through to young adults up to 25 years. Each section takes part in fun, family friendly activities while building friendships and a wide range of outdoors and water skills.
The ‘Youth Leading Adults Supporting‘ program not only develops our youth members’ leadership experience, it improves their overall executive function as they practice the planning and communication skills needed to excel at school and life in a non-formal, safe learning environment.
As Group Leaders, our volunteer role supports and mentors our young people. We model behaviour and skills that help shape our youth members and promote the opportunities and activities for them to test their skills and see just how far they can go.

Canning Sea Scouts Group Leader
Canning Sea Scouts is an active group and we have around 70 youth members across all sections, from Joeys to Rovers. As a Sea Scout Group, there is an emphasis on sailing/water activities, particularly for the older sections in the summer months.
We are seeking an enthusiastic Group Leader, preferably with some prior Scouting experience (e.g. Section Leader, active parent) and/or someone with sailing experience. Our Group Leader is supported by an Assistant Group Leader and Group Support Committee.
About Becoming A Group Leader
The volunteer role of the Group Leader is to manage the Canning Sea Scouts Group. As a Volunteer Leader with Scouts WA, your support contributes meaningfully towards the development of WA youth.
Our volunteers and mentors engage on a deeper level with their local community and take part in activities and events designed to create positive and lasting change. You’ll also enjoy a range of fun and challenging new experiences with an amazing group of people.
As a Group Leader, you’ll not only apply your existing professional skills to your group, you will develop a range of new ones through accredited leadership training. Scouts will provide full training and support in your role. Your new qualifications will take you and your group on exciting adventures!
Our Group Leader supports our Canning Sea Scouts Section Leaders, who are at the forefront of delivering our youth program. You will also manage the Group Support Committee, made up of a core group of dedicated parents, to support the Group’s youth program and resources.
The Canning Sea Scouts Group has a main hall in Canning, just off Centenary Avenue, Wilson and we also currently manage the Scout Water Activity Centre in Como, which is the base for our sailing and water-based activities.
Scouts WA provides a comprehensive screening and training program for all volunteers to ensure the safety of all members and provide specific training required for leadership positions. More information here.

The Scouts Youth Program
Delivery of the progressive, age appropriate ‘Youth Leading Adults Supporting’ Scouting program takes our entire community. However, it is our generous Group Leaders, who volunteer and mentor that provide one of the most important aspects of Scouting. Being a Scout Group Leader is more than just showing up, it’s about understanding that the positive influence of your role will be pivotal in influencing and developing the lives of our youth members.
Group Leader Training and Support
Training and development of Scouts WA adult volunteers is compulsory to ensure that our Leaders have the necessary skills and knowledge to lead young people and other adults.
Training is provided through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training – WA Campus, our registered training organisation, which is accredited to run qualifications and these qualifications and skills are nationally recognised outside of Scouts Australia.
Scouting provides so many opportunities for our youth members to achieve their goals and become active members of their local, national and international communities. As an adult Group Leader, you play an integral role in supporting the development of our Scouts as they reach their full potential, whether you are directly supporting our young people or supporting your fellow adults. Scouting is often noted as having some of the best leadership training in the world – and our adult leader training just got even better!

Canning Sea Scouts Cub Section Leader
Canning Sea Scouts current Cub Leaders are stepping down at the end of 2022 and we have two leaders-in-training. Our Cub Unit currently has 22 youth members, a permanent parent helper (for Terrain) and a weekly roster for parent help.
About The Role
Section leaders are key to delivering a fun, safe and challenging youth program. As a Cub Leader, you will support our youth members on their personal scouting journey and encouraging them to progress through achievement pathways.

Wood Badge Training Program – Certificate of Proficiency
The Certificate of Proficiency requires completion of the relevant ‘Youth Program leader’ or ‘Program Support Leader’ curriculum.
Each curriculum comprises:
- On The Job training
- On Demand Learning
- Face to Face courses
Participants are assigned a mentor known as a ‘Personal Leader Adviser’ to guide them through this training. Upon attaining a ‘Certificate of Proficiency’, Leaders receive their Gilwell Woggle and are also eligible to receive a Certificate of Adult Appointment.
Wood Badge Training Program – Scouting Leadership
Scouting Leadership builds on the skills and knowledge gained during proficiency training and the opportunity to have applied this learning in a practical environment.
Scouting Leadership comprises:

Cub Scout Grey Wolf Award
The Grey Wolf Award is the highest award you can earn in the Cub Scout Section. We consider it the pinnacle of your Scouting at this stage and is a milestone in your Scouting life.
To be awarded the Grey Wolf Award, Cub Scouts must complete or achieve: –
Milestone
- Complete Milestone 3 (Milestone 1 and Milestone 2 are optional)
Milestones are the recognition of a Cub Scouts’ active involvement in a diverse program, and the development of their leadership skills through experience. A well-planned program will help to make this a reality; it starts with an engaging mix of all the Challenge Areas, and also requires the sharing of assisting and leading opportunities.
The Milestones involve Cub Scouts being involved with a range of activities, normally over a 6-12-month period. This will include all the Challenge Areas, and each Cub Scout will take on roles in participating, assisting and leading.
Outdoor Adventure Skills
Achieve at least within Outdoor Adventure Skills:
- Core Areas: – Bushcraft Stage 3, Bushwalking Stage 3 and Camping Stage 3
- Complete 8 Stage progressions (total) in the Outdoor Adventure Skills across any of the skills. Can include advancements of Core Area Stages.
The Outdoor Adventure Skills framework promotes youth members’ exploration of, and progression through key outdoor pursuits. Designed for all ages and abilities, the Outdoor Adventure Skills reinforce what Scouting is well known for, and compliments other personal progression opportunities provided by Scouting.
Scouts aren’t required to finish any Outdoor Adventure Skills Stages however if they want to achieve the Peak Award in the Section they will need to achieve certain stages of the Outdoor Adventure Skills. Refer to each Sections Peak Award for more details.
This innovative framework has nine broad category streams with nine developmental stages within each stream, 23 activity streams in total which our youth members are encouraged to explore.
Special Interest Areas
- Complete six Special Interest Areas activity projects, each totalling at least four hours of effort, across at least two different Special Interest Areas.
Special Interest Areas (SIAs) encourage Scouts from all Sections to try new things and pursue existing interests. Scouts set their own goals in one of the six SIAs, enabling them to design a project that interests and challenges them personally.
SIAs give young people ownership of their own development. Research tells us that this is important to learning success. SIAs build upon skills such as creativity, independence, and problem-solving. Special Interest Areas teach Scouts to set, plan towards, and achieve goals. SIAs projects are deliberately open-ended and designed to meet the individual needs of each Scout.
The SIAs provide scope for adaptability and future proofing of the Achievement Pathways. For example, when new and emerging technologies are developed, Scouts can easily pursue them without having to create new SIAs.
Other Peak Award Activities
- Complete a ‘Cub Scout Leadership Course’ or ‘Personal Development Course‘ of at least one day in duration
- Plan> and lead an adventurous journey of at least 4 hours in duration using the Grey Wolf Adventurous Journey Planner
- Complete a Personal Reflection on your Scouting journey with your peers, supported by adults, Cub Scout Milestones – Supporting Personal Milestones.
The Grey Wolf Award requires approval of the Unit Council. All the award requirements must be completed, and the Notice of Completion Grey Wolf Award form approved and submitted before the Cub Scout progresses to the Scout Section to achieve this peak award.
Ages 8-11 years, boys and girls
Each week, our Cub Scouts get together for about an hour and a half for fun and adventures. Cub Scouts have a role as part of a Patrol (small team) and a unit (all Cub Scouts as a group).
- Creating an individual path and setting up for new challenges
- Developing leadership responsibilities
- Understanding the community
- Developing problem-solving skills
- Great adventures in nature
Cub Scouts begin to decide their own adventures and take more responsibility in their Scouting process. They explore further into nature and their communities, building understanding of their responsibilities to both. Their activities include sports meetings, visits to interesting destinations such as factories and fire department headquarters, plus trips to the zoo and museums. They learn bushcraft and how to fly model airplanes – some even fly in real planes.

Over the last 18 months at Canning Sea Scouts, we’ve had five cubs achieve their Grey Wolf Award, which is a testament to the supportive environment within our cub unit.
The Grey Wolf Award is the ultimate award for a Cub Scout. To be eligible, our Cub Scouts must complete: 
- Milestone 3 in the Program Essentials
- Outdoor Adventure Skills requirements
- 6 Special Interest Areas
- An Adventurous Journey
- A Personal Reflection with peers and adult support
You will work with the Unit Council to provide a balanced, quality and engaging program. As an established Cub Unit, we have lots of resources available to help you achieve this.
